Sanibel Island

Sanibel and neighbor Captiva Islands are barrier islands off the Southwest coast of Florida, in the Ft. Myers-Cape Coral area.  Sanibel and Captiva were accessible only by ferry boat until 1963, when a causeway was completed linking the islands to the mainland.

Sanibel is a popular tourist destination known for its shell beaches and its wildlife areas.  Visitors are frequently seen bending down to look for shells, a posture aptly called the “Sanibel stoop.”

More than half of the land area is preserved in its natural state as wildlife refuges.  The largest, the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, is home to over 220 species of birds.  Visitors to the refuge can walk, drive, bike or kayak through mangrove forests and tidal flats to watch ibis, egrets, anhingas, herons, pelicans, cormorants, sandpipers, terns and other bird species!
